Really, Les Paul DID make the first solid body electric guitar - it was called “The Log”, because it was just a block of wood with strings and electronics. That was in the early ’40s. Then came the Fender Telecaster in ‘49 (which was the first commercially succesful solid-body), the Les Paul in ‘52, and so on.
not quite the first solid body guitar was Leo Fender’s telecaster (then called broadcaster) in 1949 the les paul model first appeared in 1952 followed by the the stratocaster in 54 and the gibson SG in 61.
i reckon slash has said it best when he said, “what a bright example of a full wonderfull life” this man did so much for us music fanatics. you will be missed Les Paul.
He started acoustically in 1930. He invented multitracking in 1940. His first electric guitar, was a railroad track. His mother told him “The day you see a cowboy on a horse playing a railroad track…” Nobody had been working on electric guitars before him. Watch “Les Paul: Chasing Sound” Then, write a new comment.
wow LP signed his guitar. LUCKY DUDE. Im sooo jealous.

What a gift to music he was. And a real class act. He sets an example for the self-absorbed music acts of the modern era.
