Learning Guitar – Buying Your First Guitar

So, guitar playing is for you and you want to buy your first guitar and play it like a ‘rock god’ all day long? But what do you do first? Which guitar is best for you? Acoustic guitar or electric? These are just some of the burning questions that need answering, even before they learn a single riff or chord progression.

Learning guitar can be a small frustrating at times, especially if you are a novice or beginner guitar player.

Many novice guitarists reckon about buying their first guitar after staring at guitars through a store window or flicking through the pages of guitar specific magazines for months or even years, imagining themselves as a rock god wowing audiences with their power chords and riffs…

No other musical instrument stirrs such strong levels of passion and emotion quite like the guitar, or inspires complete beginners to fantasize about making cool tunes for the masses. But, fantasizing alone is not enough to get a ‘real-life’ guitar to produce a notable tune. Lots of practice, blood, sweat and sometimes heartache is also needed as well, and during all this effort, it is all too simple to become disheartened and lose sight of the passion and enthusiasm which made you want take guitar lessons in the first place.

New guitar recruits have never had it so excellent when it comes to buying their first guitar. With the advent of modern hi-tech manufacturing processes and the huge amount of competition for your money, the price of starter guitars has free-falled in recent years.

Don’t forget though, the ancient saying “let the buyer beware’ still has a grain of truth when purchasing your first guitar. Watch out for over zealous salesmen trying to persuade you into buying a guitar that is neither suitable nor right for the sound and style of guitar music you wish to play. Don’t be pushed into buying an acoustic guitar if you want to be a rock-god playing heavy metal in a stadium!

The first thing you should do is choose in advance what sort of acoustic guitar or electric guitar you want to buy and don’t forget to set an overall budget for your buy and seek sound advice from a knowledgeable guitar player before going to your local guitar store. A fantastic thought would be to take along your own expert with you when you visit a guitar store… You’ll be able to question them questions and get the right answers without all the sales pitch!

There is a bewildering variety of instruments out there in ‘guitar land’ and at a wide range of prices too. If you want to be able to play your guitar anywhere – indoors or out – with a minimum of fuss, then an acoustic guitar is the choice for you. No need to plug into the nearest electricity supply or worrying about blowing a fuse. The cheapest acoustic guitar types tend to be nylon stringed ‘classical’ guitars but these tend to lack powerful tones needed for most pop and rock songs. For this you will probably need a steel strung ‘flat top’ guitar which tend to be slightly more expensive, but are fantastic for finger-picking and quick strumming work.

If you have visions of becoming a rock legend then there is no substitute for an electric guitar. The musical impact of playing an electric guitar will be ingrained on your soul, but to experience it you will need to buy and amplifier, a speaker, and be powered up… In reality though there is no difference in the way you play an electric guitar from that of an acoustic guitar except that electric guitars tend to be a small heavier, but there is no huge difference in the amount of technique needed to master the guitar.

So when it is time to make your choice between acoustic and electric, the only deciding factor should be your own musical preferences and the practical requirements of each type of guitar.

Nearly everyone on this planet Earth has thought about learning how to play guitar. But, are there that many people that really know and learn to play the guitar? Unfortunately, not too many people end up learning it as one might reckon. Not too long ago I read about there being around ten thousand guitarists in U.S.A.. Maybe you reckon that is a huge number? But, if you compare that to the US population, which is about 305 million, ten thousand is just a puny number in comparison. So why are there so few guitarists? You and I both know that most people want to learn to play the guitar at least once in their life. You see, it is very simple.. Let me point out the main reasons people stop themselves from learning the guitar.

1 You Don’t Have The Time

Most people live very busy schedules and just don’t place learning how to play the guitar on the top of the to do list. This is a very valid excuse, but, people don’t realize how small time one really needs to learn the guitar. In fact, practicing 15 minutes a day is all you really need. Just playing 15 minutes a day helps you build up the calluses in your fingers. Without those calluses, it will be too painful and make it hard to play the guitar. Also, the guitar can be very frustrating in the beginning. What I’m saying is, you are trying to get your fingers to be stretched in ways they have never done before. If you keep practicing 15 minutes a day, it won’t be so painful for you to play the guitar. Plus, it will be simpler for you to learn and keep your interest. Now don’t try and tell me you don’t have 15 minutes per day?! There are also online lessons that are available. So, don’t try that the excuse of not enough time to take lessons either!

2 It Cost Too Much To Take Lessons

Many years ago this was a very valid excuse. But, with the computer age and the demand for excellent guitar instruction, online guitar lessons have become “all the buzz”! You can learn in half the time at 3/4 the cost. There are high quality lessons available online for only $15 a month. This was unheard of 15 years ago when private guitar instruction was the only available option. High quality DVD packages are also available and can easily take you from a complete beginner, with no experience whatsoever to an absolute professional, within a year (depending on your skill level and how often you practice) These DVD lessons can be a small more pricey. But, they are only a one time fee.

3 The Way You Reckon

So, now that we’ve gotten “time & money” out of the way. Why are you still hesitant?! Well, it’s very simple. It’s YOU! That’s it. You! It is all in you head. Stop saying this is too hard and just do it already. I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years and couldn’t imagine my life without it. You will never be bored again! People will like hearing you play (as long as you sound excellent! ) And there really is just nothing that compares to it. You must stop this thinking that it’s too hard. It really isn’t. I only wish I had these same options when I first started out. Who knows how many months of frustration I could have avoided.

All in all. Give it a try and just plain learn to play the guitar. Life will become so much more fulfilling to you.
