7 TIPS HOW TO BECOME THE BEST GUITARIST EVER
1.Practise, practise and practise
There´s no simple way to become the best guitarist, so practise regularly. It is always better to practice 1 hour every day then 4 hours once a week. Always warm-up very well before every practise. A steady warm-up can prevent you from injuries. Finally and most importantly, just pay attention to your own body´s feedback. If it hurts, don´t do it.
2.Practise wisely
You should make a timed-schedule showing how much time you will spend practising different guitar techniques.
If you have just one hour for practise your schedule should look something like this :
10 minutes warm-up
10 minutes chord changing
15 minutes alternate picking
15 minutes scales
10 minutes improvisation
Later when you know the basics from each guitar technique, you can focus on the techniques which you need to improve the most. At the end of each practise session you should try and play your favourite songs.
3. Be patient and have fun whilst playing
It is always a long process when learning any musical instrument. I remember times when I was frustrated that my progress was slow and I couldn´t play like other guitarists I had seen. Simply, I was not patient enough and the truth was; I wasn´t ready yet. After quite some time of practising, I too could play like the others; so never get frustrated and never give up. Play your favourite songs of your favourite bands, make your own melodies, record covers and upload them on youtube, so you can compare yourself with other guitarists and change experiences with them. Simply… just do what makes you pleased.
4. Use metronome
The best way is to learn to use metronome from the beginning, because it is very vital for every guitarist to be able to stay in rhythm. Later on when you start playing in a band it will be a fantastic advantage to you. It’s usually simpler to start learning a new song by setting the tempo at a slower speed than may be indicated on the piece of music you’re playing. Setting a slower tempo will give you time to map out the fingering on the guitar and get used to recognizing the down beat. Be patient with yourself. With a small persistance and practice you will start to notice a certain improvement in your overall performance. It’s just a matter of time.
5.Learn the notes on guitar fretboard and in music theory
This is very vital when you want to make your own music or play in the band. Here is the method how i learned the notes on the fretboard:
Start by playing C on the 6th string (8th fret) then on the 5th string (3rd fret) then on 4th string (10th fret) and so on up to the 1st string and back down to the 6th. Then go on to the next note and do the same thing. Suggested order: C, G, D, A, E, B, F
6. Train your ears
With excellent ears you can add improvisation to your performances and jam with other musicians. Practice figuring out the chords to familiar songs. For songs that you do know the chords to, try playing them in an unfamiliar key, or see if you can change or add chords to make a new harmony that still fits the melody.
7. Learn scales, chords and different guitar techniques
Learn different scales in different keys, chord shapes and guitar techniques like alternate picking, pull-off´s and hammer-on´s, arpeggios and many others.
