I have had my for awhile now. Refill is not too hard. My instrument seems heaby, but the spongy material has a nasty blackness to it. New, it had a white to beige appearance, but not now. I’ve had friends suggest to bleach it … etc., etc., but I’m worried of chemical residue invading my wood and compromising my precious. I’m already looking around. Bought an Oasis, but I have some reservations about that too.

This is a fantastic product, but much depends on how dry your instrument is and how dry it is where you keep your guitar. The nice thing about it is because it doesn’t seal up the soundhole on your guitar it will humidify the rest of the instrument when kept in the case.
But, I’ve never been able to get my guitar over about 37% in the case, and the foam seems to last only so long even when using distilled water. Now, if it’s really dry you can jam about as many of those rubber tube type humidifiers in there as you want and drastically raise the humidity in your case.
Still, kudos for Planet Waves for making a humidifier that doesn’t drip and touches only the strings.

This is the second Planet Waves humidifier I have bought. The first one, I got 5 years ago, when I got my Taylor. It has a slightly different design, but similar in functionality. The ancient one still works fantastic. I got this one for my daughter who just got a Taylor. They dry out in less than a week in the dry winter months, but it only takes a few minutes to dampen them again with distilled water.

This new version, where the top flange snaps off to expose the sponge, is much simpler to use than the ancient version. You can moisten the sponge quickly and easily without any syringe to annoy you or to lose. But, you CAN lose the top flange, and I reckon I finally did, somehow — have not seen it in a while.
Another benefit to this new model is that the body width — and therefore the amount you have to displace your strings — is less. that’s excellent on all guitars but especially where strings are close, as on a 12-string. I’ve had several different types of humidifiers but now this is best I’ve found. (Honestly though the ones I admired most were the ancient plastic 35mm film film containers my friend drilled some holes in, stuffed with sponge, and would wet and toss into the guitar case. I really liked the price$ of those. . . ) Ellis

Other soundhole humidifiers haven’t held as much water and this one seems to to a better job… I reckon it is because it hangs on the strings and doesn’t block the airflow like the hole-covering types…
