Isn’t it a terrible feeling when your sitting there guitar in hand and you seem not to be making any progress? You wonder why your not making any progress after all those hours of practice you have place in? How can I play for so long, day after day, sweating over these tab books, and still not be much better?

You are certainly not alone! All the greats have found themselves in this very spot at one time or another. I myself found myself in this same quandary at one point of my learning process. I had all the guitar tab books, the magazines, the backing track cd’s, the videos, everything, but it just seemed like i had hit a wall. It may be just the boredom factor of daily technical lesson, or maybe i had just learned the extent of my technical skills but it was so frustrating to just sit there and wonder how i was going to get better.

So what i did was place aside all the learning material and turned on the radio. This was the best thing i did to learn how to play guitar. I attempted to play along with the songs that came on, granted it sounded dreadful, but i started getting the hang of it in no time. Some times the best thing to do is to try to do your own learning.

After awhile i started switching the music styles and listening to different kinds of music like classical and jazz. Soon enough i started to notice that my fingers could slide up and down the fret board, and I’d know exactly where to go next to play the note I wanted. Soon enough i was playing along to most of these songs and different genres with ease.

I can honestly say this was the time that i learned the most! You can only learn so much technically when you need to switch to just trying your own thing. Now, don’t get me incorrect, I am not suggesting you stop taking guitar lessons, and learning scales. But at the very least, I’d strongly recommend your accompanying your theory with outright improvisation. I reckon this is a huge problem with a lot of players, they are constantly learning the new songs of their favorite bands, note-for-note. Place down those note books, and just play!

It will benefit you in the long run! I know it helped me a lot, now im living my dream playing in a band on the weekend. So give it a try, set aside an extra half hour to just try playing along with your favorite band, without looking at any notes. It really is a major step in learning how to how to play guitar like a pro.
