@Bobomooman2395 It’s a bending iron. Basically a hot pipe which is used to bend the wood for the sides or the binding materials. Some people use electric ones like that and some still use an ancient pipe with a propane torch to heat it up. Takes a small bit more work to bend things accurately with an iron which is why some use commercial bending machines such as the Fox Bender.
Pretty gutsy drilling the tuner holes freehand.
@kolialliotto give the guy a break hes workin miracles with limited tooling…he probably used another workshop with a press to form the sides…i guess..
3:30 what is that?
why did not you show us how you made the sides? If you had spoken telling us what you were doing, that would have helped. Anyway, fantastic video.
@kolialliotto They are spool clamps made for joing top/backs to guitar dies. They usually have a soft wood (or cork) on the part that touches the top/back to prevent it digging in. I always wondered the same until I tried them out.
how did u make sides
Wouldnt it be nice if we could go that quick?
what a speedy guy, you must do this a lot and be really comfortable with the process. jk lol.
Sides aren’t that hard to make. Looking at the rest of the videos I’m guessing he bent the sides himself. The thing he’s using to bend the purfling is a bending iron and you can use it to bend your sides too. Freehand bending with an iron is a bit more hit and miss than doing it with a press. I really prefer freehand bending the ribs for my instruments. And, yes, you can buy pre-bent sides from StewMac but nothing beats doing it yourself.
I’m pretty sure he bought the sides. The only way I have seen them made is with a steam press.
fantastic vid but you couldof shown how you bended the sides
would these clamps make depressions on the top or back?
exactly! why didn’t you show us how you made the sides? I want to see! bump?
Are those clamps home made or bought ?
1:27 whooops!
wtf , were this the sides comefrom?
hey man! how do you make the lateral parts??? they’re the most hard thing….
i dont know how he did it, but ive seen them steam press the wood into that shape
¡¡¡¡¡¡hey maaaaan¡¡¡¡¡¡¿¿¿como cogones doblas los aros??????¡¡¡¡ere un un atista¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
what kind of wood do you use for the sides too?
due,how do you bend that wood??
That drill bit you used for the tuning machine holes was a bit too long I reckon. The shorter the bit, the less wobble it may have. That wobbled a lot. Try brad point bits. Or better yet, forstner bits. They are very accurate. And you should clamp that to the drill press table. If the bit binds up in the channel, the whole thing could grab and spin at the RPM of the drill! Your hands are your life man. Keep ‘em safe. Gorgeous work! Peace.
D00d how could you leave out the sides
I learnt mostly from reading and looking at pictures of how other people did it as they posted it on their websites, I also built smaller experimental instruments before attempting a full blown guitar
