Ervin Somogyi: The Responsive Guitar – featuring Guitarist / Composer Steve Erquiaga
What makes a truly exceptional hand made steel string guitar really ‘sing’ is how the sound box is worked by a master. Veteran luthier Ervin Somogyi is highlighted in this small film about his work and his new books, “The Responsive Guitar” and “Making The Responsive Guitar”, available from Luthiers Press in June of 2009. With more than 40 years experience in Berkeley, California as one of America’s finest hand made steel string guitar builders, Somogyi is at his best — in sound, end and design. A rare musical glimpse into the workshop of one of America’s most respected hand guitar builders, Ervin Somogyi. Original music “If Dreams Could Dance” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” composed and performed on a Somogyi guitar by guitarist Steve Erquiaga, available from his album, CafĂ© Paradiso.

Hope i’m lucky enough to make a Somogyi guitar mine one day!
Trully pieces of art, both estheticaly and tonally too.
would your brother be intersted in building an instrument for me?
look at that guitar at 5:40
Dr. Somogyi, I first heard about you back in the early 80′s, when Windham Hill guitarists were heralding a fantastic leap forward in acoustic guitar music, and many of them came to you for instruments that had the expansive brilliance to bring these new musics into the light of day. You set me on my path to become a luthier. You’ve been my mentor and teacher ever since then, albeit at a distance. You are a fantastic gift to us all. I wish you the very best of excellent fortune, Sir. -edwinson
Just breathtaking artistry. This is a right MAESTRO!!
although a player, I am gonna check his book on how the guitar ticks, how the parts contribute, how they can be shaped for sound. BTW, did you notice that Mr Somogyi plays very well himself?
your a lucky man
This video is the first i’ve ever heard of Ervin, and I must say, that was gorgeous. Brilliant video. Brilliant guitars. Brilliant talent behind these gorgeous works of art.
I own a Somogyi om guitar and it is truly a work of art. Nothing else compares. He is the master of tone! The guitar is also the best playing that I’ve owned. Just like it!
this cat is brilliant.
Todo un maestro, q no solo conoce todos los secretos de este oficio tan bello my tan complejo, sino q ademas tiene la bondad de compartir todo lo q sabe con nosotros.
Muchas gracias maestro Ervin
Ervin is my all time favourite guitar maker, my dream will hopefully become reality the day I will really order one from Ervin:) what a master!
My brother took Ervin’s sounding workshop last year and then went out and built me the best guitar of his life – by far. My brother had built many guitars but had just about given up on ever building one that had the sound he was looking for, until Ervin. Thank you, Ervin, for so generously sharing your gifts with us mortals in your upcoming books.
my luthier idol..
gorgeous…
