I’ll tell you this up front- I LIKE playing live. Don’t get me flawed- I’m primarily a recording artist these days, with only very occasional alternatives to grace a stage. But that hasn’t dimmed the electrical energy of playing my lead guitar solos dwell and loud for all the world to see and hear.
For many of the late-70’s 80’s and early 90’s I was a touring lead guitarist is a heavy metallic rock band in the American Midwest. A lot of the expertise of being on the road was overrated, and in reality a lot of it pretty sucked- but for that 3 or four hours you’re onstage, the PA and lights are up, and a wildly respect crowd stands before you, there may be simply nothing higher on planet Earth in my humble opinion.
The most vital rush of one of these experience got here with my mid-80’s laborious rock band Artist. We traveled with a giant PA, fifty 1000-watt pars, and a 1,500-watt followspot. With this setup in mind, image this- when it came time for a blazing scorching solo, I walked to the entrance of the stage, the place the white-scorching circle of the followspot would learn me simply in time for my lead. After which- the soundman would crank my guitar to the purpose where I could hear it bounce off the back wall, reflected again at me. I’ll take this feeling to my grave! As a lead guitarist, I’ve never felt such a rush as this- in all probability never will again. It was the epitome of all my years of practice. Just a few occasions, proper in the midst of a solo, I’d assume back to my fantastic guitar instructor and his unbelievable endurance with me as a plowed via the weekly classes, and I’d give him silent thanks for getting me that far.
For the technically-minded out there, I usually would kick in my trusty BOSS Dynacomp (compressor) proper earlier than I launched right into a blistering solo riff- that impact made the notes so fluid and gave them a pleasant presence. Occasionally, I’d intensify the guitar solo with a bit of stereo chorus to essentially fatten up the sound.
Aside from a couple of prolonged 15-minute songs on the setlist through which I did a ton of improv riffing during the solo (hey, I needed to fill a bunch of time), I sometimes wrote the solo before we ever took it reside, after which just about stuck to that arrangement. I tried to do a mix of minor and main riffs with a couple of hammer ons simply to decorate it up in most solos that I did. Generally, being wi-fi, I’d run out to a desk in the midst of the room, hop on high of it, and play my solo proper there, looking into the eyes of the astonished patrons that were holding onto their drinks at that table. And all the time, there the wasted guy in the back of the room screaming “play guitar solo!!!” That was fun stuff. J
Oh yeah, those have been awesome times. They might be over, but then again, they might not be. Unsure if I’d be capable of hop on those tables these days, tho. Unless someone at the desk wanted to provide me a boost. learn to play guitar solo
